EP of the Week: “Soulthing” EP by Emery Warman on Madtech

Ascending his way up the long and winding ladder of house and techno, Hungarian-born Emery Warman is definitely a force to be reckoned with. Having turned the heads of such heavyweights as Marco Carola and Richie Hawtin, this London-based artist returns with “Soulthing” on Kerri Chandler’s label, Madtech.

Commencing this three track original is the opening package titled “Simple Mind”. Led by a groove bolstered by percussion, this techno steam engine powers through scattered vocal flourishes, sonorous synth swirls and rugged bass beats all possessing stripped-back characteristics.

Following on from this, “Do Tha Music” sends the temp into descent as Warman centres his focus on a more constricted and epitomized rhythm complimented by further natural percussive beats, spiralling subs and sibilating vocals.

Concluding this more sophisticated chapter of techno accompanied with subtle textures, warm sounds and intricately constructed grooves is title track, “Soulthing”. Showing pure dedication to the heritage of the house and techno genres, this final insertion is a six-and-a-half-minute explosion of uninterrupted grooves with qualities of hesitating deep-end drones, gravitating drum lines and tenderly unravelling dynamics.
