Friday nights in Ibiza Town well and truly evolved last summer with Hot Since 82’s Labyrinth at Pacha drawing in many punters each and every week. Whilst a lot of their success can be accredited to Daley Padley, his resident selectors played an essential role in forming the critical backbone of the party throughout the duration of 2017, one of those names being Watergate favourite, Matthias Meyer.
Back behind the decks for A Labyrinth Story this season, the Bad Bodenteich native has three highly anticipated dates at the cherries club throughout the summer, with the first coming tonight. However, Ibiza isn’t always about life in the fast lane.
The island boasts a wealth of amazing attractions too including many pristine beaches, lush restaurants and several hippy markets. Arguably one of the most magnetising aspects to life in Ibiza though is its world famous sunset. Spectacular, seductive and sometimes surreal, the Mediterranean sunset is one of a kind and something the Berlin-based selector truly appreciates and cherishes.
We caught up with Matthias Meyer to hear about his favourite sunset spots on the island and the records he feels defines them to a tee.
Last year, we were exploring the north of the island and Benirràs beach was recommended. It’s such a special place, very quiet away from the busy party side of the island. It has really great beach bars, we loved Elements. On Sundays, they have the legendary drumming rituals where lots of the hippies come down selling crafts and dancing. This is one of my favourite times to go to watch the sunset. Its pure magic and great to see another side of ibiza.
I picked this track, it’s one of my all-time favourite deep and chilled tracks. The percussion, piano and chords always remind me of sunset and the beach.
Marshall Jefferson vs Noosa Heads – ‘Mushrooms’ (Salt City Orchestra Remix)
This is on the south west side of the island, close to the famous Es Vedra and Cala D’Hort. 25 minutes outside San Antonio, Cala Carbo is small and cosy giving a nice break from the busy stretches of beaches in town. The Sunset doesn’t fall right on the water, but for that reason, the beach is usually empty later in the day. It feels great to have such a great spot all to yourself.
That place is just as intimate as this edit I did a few years ago.
SBTRKT feat. Sampha ‘Hold On’ (Matthias Meyer edit)
North of San Antonio and to the right of Cala Gracio is a super nice place, Cala Gracioneta. It can be really packed during the daytime because it’s so well sheltered, but when I wait late enough for the sunset, I’m never disappointed. With a small group of friends, it can be a magical experience and a great way to remedy yourself from the night before.
And here we have a track from a friend of mine from the Giegling label. We’ve hung out a bit in Ibiza.
Traumprinz – ‘Changes’
Surrounded by a pine forest, Cala Salada really feels like a world of its own. Having a swim just as the sun sets on the small bay is an unforgettable experience, I can’t wait to go back!
This LP, and especially this track, always reminds me of me driving by car through the island.
Vermont – ‘Übersprung’
This place is probably the most famous one in Ibiza but it’s still the place to be for a sunset. The energy and view of that small island is just incredible. I go there almost every time. This track is a sunset classic for me as much as this place is an all-round classic.
