With his music being recognised by the likes of Solomun, Sasha and Nic Fanciulli, Jamie has continued to impress by releasing music on labels such as Under No Illusion, 8bit and Skream’s Unsound Ofmind. This was followed by an incredible summer residency for Steve Lawler’s Warriors at Sankeys Ibiza.
In more recent weeks, the Scottish selector has been busy in the studio formulating a creative four-part EP with Citizenn. In addition to this, he has also been confirmed to play at Papagayo Nightclub in Gran Canaria on New Year’s Eve.
We recently caught up with Warriors regular, Jamie Roy, and discussed his earliest influences, how his Warriors residency at Sankeys Ibiza came about this summer and his thoughts on the creative mind behind this popular concept, Steve Lawler.
First of all Jamie, you originate from the north of the British Isles in Scotland. In terms of nightlife, what does your home country have to offer to the electronic music scene?
Up until about eight years ago, it had very little to be honest. Therefore, my brother and I decided to start our own thing and have had acts like Jackmaster, Slam and loads more over the years.
In terms of your sound, can you please describe it to us and what early influences have defined your sound thus far…
Early influences included Green Velvet, Sneak and of course, my older brother who got me in to all of this. Sound-wise, it’s changed as everything progresses but still, it all goes back to house music.
Of course, you showcase this very sound within your special guest mix appearance on The Next Evolution Podcast. What inspired your track selection for this mix? What kind of an insight to your sound are you looking to give listeners here?
This is my Ibiza summer for me in one hour – it’s absolutely full of belters.
This summer in Ibiza has seen you accomplish some impressive things. You have been an essential part of Sundays at Sankeys Ibiza with Warriors as their weekly resident. How did this opportunity come about? Describe the emotions that flowed through your body at the time of being informed of this news…
It was mad really, I was in Australia touring with Hot Since 82 and I received a phone call from Steve saying that a few Ibiza heads had mentioned my name and he offered me to be resident for 15 weeks this summer. I was buzzing and what a summer that was… trust me!
What was your biggest highlight of your Warriors residency this past summer in Ibiza?
Every week was a highlight but warming up for Groove Armada is up there with the best.
What are your thoughts on the creative mind behind Warriors, Steve Lawler? Do you take inspiration from his work at all?
The man’s a legend, we got on right from the word go and he made me feel part of the Warriors family straight away.
Next month will see you release a remix on Max Chapman’s label, Resonance Records. What can we expect from this particular remix and how will it differ to the original track?
I loved doing this remix. It is very ‘Warriors’ style possessing a lot of punch. I used some influences in the break from the original, which makes it sound great I think.
Finally, in terms of musical talent, who do you think is a rising star of ‘The Next Evolution’ and why?
A couple of mates from Ibiza – Drew Moreland and Pat Hickey. If these boys get some tunes out, they will do great.
Jamie Roy joins The Next Evolution podcast series this week with over an hour of eclectic House with some truly badass grooves. Have a listen!
