Throughout its 20 year plus history, BBC Radio 1 Weekend has been hosted by some truly phenomenal venues! With a weekend possessing so much hype, so much talent and such a level of superstardom, such musical royalty deserves a palace or kingdom worthy of hosting such iconic fortitude.
The 20th anniversary in 2015 saw BBC Radio 1 Weekend take charge of the prestigious Ushuaia Complex with a free party hosted by Annie Mac on the Friday before a very special debut edition of Creamfields Ibiza conquered the venue and the Hard Rock Hotel the following day. This happened on the same day as the famous sunset session on the Sunset Strip which was followed by the final part of the weekend at Ibiza Rocks Hotel hosted by Pete Tong.
BBC Radio 1 Weekend has been hosted at some terrific venues if you date further back in time. Who remembers Radio 1’s maiden voyage back in July 1995 at Ku (now known as Privilege)? This saw the legendary Nicky Holloway offer the Essential Mix live from Manumission! The following year saw Danny Rampling’s first show live from an empty Amnesia whilst San Antonio played hosts to the first sunset broadcast too.1997 then saw the move from Cafe del Mar to Cafe Mambo whilst 1999 saw Dave Pearce’s Dance Anthems take over Space. Six years later, a decade of dance took place in 2005 as Radio 1 aired a special 12-hour broadcast from Space back to the UK! Since then, new venues such as Ibiza Rocks and Ushuaia have entered the fray and have played integral parts in the Radio 1 Weekend in Ibiza ever since!
BBC Radio 1 Weekend Ibiza is ALL ABOUT THE MUSIC! In terms of music, this weekend comes second-to-none on the Ibiza calendar. It is considered the pinnacle, be all and end all of weekends and one nobody wants to miss (basically, if you’re not here, you’ll be crying into your pillow over missing out on such an experience… yes, it’s that damn good).
Every year on the Friday, Radio 1 holds a “Free” party – which has recently been held at the Ushuaia Ibiza complex. Last year saw a very special Creamfields Ibiza party that took place at Ushuaia and Hard Rock hotel.
The BBC Radio 1 Weekend Ibiza 2016 will be busy and is the most expensive time to visit Ibiza, but there’s a good reason for this. This is the week that all of the promoters put on the best DJs, every club, party and bar is full with an amazing atmosphere. This is when Ibiza truly is at its peak and is something to get involved in.
Well all you have to do is take a slow walk down memory lane to the events of last year’s massive BBC Radio 1 Weekend Ibiza blowout – the 20th anniversary weekend – where crowds flocked in their thousands just to see their favourite international DJ’s perform on the grand stages of Ushuaia and Ibiza Rocks.
Having let the knowledge sink in that Cream and BBCR1 would pair up to take over Ushuaia, the weekend was already set to be a guaranteed sell-out. However firstly, the BBC Radio 1 Weekend Ibiza extravaganza took control of the almighty Ushuaia Complex on the Friday. With a hint of what to expect this year, 2015 saw headline names such as Disclosure, MK and Hot Since 82 perform. There were back-to-back specials from the veteran BBCR1 duo of Annie Mac and Pete Tong as well as Jamie Jones and Patrick Topping. Friday’s event even featured Calvin Harris’ only Ibiza appearance of the summer!
The following night at the San Antonio Sunset Strip was no different and certainly lived up to high expectations. With a superstar billing of underrated talent ready to mesmerise their crowds, the Sunset Strip army was ready. The likes of Duke Dumont, Redlight and Rudimental all ensured revellers were more than satisfied with the music on display.
On the same day over at the famous Ushuaia Complex and Hard Rock Hotel, Creamsfields made its highly anticipated debut in Ibiza and with queues stretching round the corner of every venue on sight, it came as no surprise when you glanced down the billing. From headliners such as The Prodigy, Pendulum, Sigma, Annie Mac, Pete Tong, Duke Dumont, MistaJam, Above & Beyond, Afrojack and Steve Angello to the incredibly talented Wilkinson, Hannah Wants, MK, Andrea Oliva, Ben Pearce and DJ Sneak, Creamfield Ibiza was loaded to the brim with the best artists from around the globe.
Sunday provided even more BBCR1 heaven at Ibiza Rocks as Pete Tong hosted a memorable evening to complete this spectacular weekend of music. The likes of Annie Mac, Andrea Oliva, B.Traits, Kolsch and the iconic Carl Cox joined him. Oh, and there was also an emphatic live performance from Ibiza favourites, Faithless, too.
Set to be bigger than ever in 2016, BBC Radio 1 Weekend Ibiza 2016 celebrates it’s 21st year of existence.
